First Year Experience Seminar

Our top priority is to assist you in making a successful academic transition into the WilmU community. For this reason, all first year students with 15 credits or less are required to attend the First Year Experience (FYE) seminar. The FYE seminar is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions that will promote success in higher education.

FAQ's for Students

What is a peer mentor?

Peer Mentors will assist first year students, enroll in FYE 101, during their academic transition into college. Mentors will offer guidance, respond to questions and provide information about campus and community resources; to empower mentees to become successful students at Wilmington University.

What are passing and failing grades?

Wilmington University utilizes a plus/minus grading system in assessing student achievement. View Table 1 (Undergraduate) and Table 2 (Graduate) for a specific numerical value, corresponding grade and explanation of the grading system.

What online systems do I need to know?

Students will utilize WebCampus for access to online services, Blackboard for online learning, and University email to stay in touch with professors and peers.  Any additional online systems needed will be outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus.

How do I get my course syllabi?

A course syllabus is usually available on Blackboard about 2 weeks prior to the start date of the course. Login to Blackboard at http://www.wilmu.edu/blackboard/index.aspx. Select the name of your course in the “My Courses” list on the Blackboard start page or the “Courses” tab. On the left course menu, click Syllabus.

Will I have to read any materials for the 1st day of class?

The instructor will specify in the course syllabus if you are required to read any materials for your first day of class.

Where do I go to get textbooks?

Textbooks are available for purchase 2 weeks before the start of classes at the Campus Store.

What supplies do I need besides my textbook?

The instructor will specify in the course syllabus if you need any additional materials for class besides the course text.

How do I get help in class?

The Student Success Center provides support and resources to help you reach your academic goals including tutoring, workshops & seminars, and resources guides.

Are there computers and internet connections on campus?

The campus offers free WiFi access and classrooms are well equipped with power outlets for personal laptop connection.  Computer labs are available but are limited to Technology majors.

How do I connect with socials events and activities?

Student Life is committed to make students college experience a positive one. Each year they hosts a series of events and activities both on and off campus. It's easy to get involved.

Where can I go if I have questions?

Call, chat or email the University Information Center (UIC) for assistance.

What is UIC?

UIC stands for University Information Center. The UIC is a source for all Wilmington University information and services.

FAQ's for Parents

What is FERPA?

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

Can I see my child's grades?

As a result of FERPA, Wilmington University must have written consent to disclose student records to parents and/or other parties. 

How much will I have to pay?

Wilmington University's low tuition rates are the same for both in-state and out-of-state students.

How can we get financial aid?

Applying for financial aid the first time can be confusing.  Our Financial Aid department has step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process.

Does WilmU offer a student discount on computers?

Yes, the University has a Technology Purchasing Program which enables students to purchase personal computers at a student discount from select vendors.

What are the requirements for my son/daughter's personal computer?

Unless specified by the course instructor there are no university requirements for personal computers.

What are the dates for the semester, breaks and final exams?

Does WilmU provide job search assistance?

The Career Services Center is a free resource that offers students and alumni help with job searches and technical training.
