Graduate Certificate in Teacher Licensure (K-6)

Broaden Your Career Opportunities by Earning Teacher Licensure

This 15-credit graduate certificate empowers graduates of Wilmington University’s non-licensure Education Studies degree programs to complete the coursework and clinical experiences required by the Delaware Department of Education to earn an initial teaching license.

Gain access to teaching positions in the public school system

There is a distinct need for licensed educators on both the national and local level. In Delaware, a wealth of employment opportunities exists for middle- and secondary-level educators. Licensure opens the door to a range of teaching positions, and this certificate provides a pathway for graduates of Wilmington University’s Education Studies program to return to WilmU to complete the coursework and Praxis exam required to earn a teaching license in Delaware.

Work toward teacher licensure through a comprehensive curriculum

The program consists of three (one-credit) practicum courses, three credits in performance assessment and nine credits in student teaching. Each practicum course requires candidates to complete 60 hours of supervised classroom experience in an approved setting. Classroom experience is supported by an additional 30 hours of practicum seminar sessions conducted by faculty. The student teaching experience requires 80 consecutive days of student teaching in a setting that is aligned to the candidate’s declared major.

Apply your certificate credits to a master’s degree

Students who have completed this teacher licensure certificate can apply all 15 credits to the M.Ed. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Education. This unique program allows the student to construct a master’s degree by choosing two (15-credit) graduate certificates from a selection of 11 areas of distinction.
