Accounting, Associate of Science


Purpose

 
The purpose of the Associate of Science degree in Accounting is to equip students with a solid foundation in accounting and the necessary skills to perform a wide range of business functions. Throughout this program, students will gain in-depth knowledge of essential accounting principles, including financial accounting, managerial accounting, cost accounting, and budget control. The curriculum also covers areas such as tax accounting, the legal aspects of accounting, and reporting procedures. Additionally, students will develop skills in statement analysis, planning, consulting, and utilizing business information systems. Emphasis is placed on professional standards and ethics, with applications geared toward careers in for-profit, public, and non-profit organizations.

Program of Study

To enhance the learning experience and prepare students for the modern accounting landscape, the program integrates digital tools like Microsoft Excel and Tableau. Excel's advanced capabilities in financial analysis and data organization, along with Tableau's powerful data visualization features, enhance technical proficiency and improve analytical and presentation skills.

Community engagement is a cornerstone of our program, fostering social responsibility and real-world application of accounting skills. Students will have the option to participate in projects like the Tax Help Practicum, providing free tax assistance to low-income individuals and families, which builds technical  skills and empathy.

Our program also includes experiential learning opportunities such as case studies, business simulations, guest lectures, and industry panels. These experiences ensure graduates are well-prepared for professional practice.

Program Competencies

Students completing the program will be able to:

  1. Summarize financial information with clarity and accuracy in oral and written formats, collaborate effectively in teams, and produce professional reports that adhere to GAAP and industry standards.

  2. Solve financial problems by applying analytical thinking, adaptability, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to address real-world accounting challenges.

  3. Develop leadership skills through mentorship, self-reflection, and experiential learning, applying these skills to promote ethical practices, sound decision-making, and influence in professional accounting contexts.

  4. Utilize research methods, data analysis techniques, and digital tools to analyze and communicate accounting information effectively, meeting the demands of an information-rich global economy.

  5. Apply legal and ethical principles with integrity and professionalism in accounting, while considering global perspectives and cultural adaptability.
