Biography
Dr. Alexis Omar earned a B.S. in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Animal Biosciences from the University of Delaware. She then continued her education by pursuing a certificate in Higher Education Administration and Higher Education Leadership. In 2020, Dr. Omar was awarded the Unidel Distinguished Graduate Scholars Award, a prestigious award which allowed her to pursue her PhD as a Research Fellow at the University of Delaware. In 2025 Dr. Omar received William J. Benton Award. The award is presented annually to two graduate students (one Ph.D. and one M.S.) who have excelled in research and have an outstanding record of academic accomplishments and service to their profession are eligible for nomination.
Dr. Omar’s dissertation involved utilizing mycoremediation, for the utilization and optimization of white-rot fungi species to inhibit various foodborne pathogens including pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoan parasites, for pre-harvest food safety. She also helped establish the University of Delaware’s Center for Environmental and Wastewater Epidemiological Research (CEWER) during the COVID-19 Pandemic which not only helped establish testing strategies for the state of Delaware but also provided surveillance data during the pandemic.
Dr. Omar currently serves as Wilmington University’s College of Sciences and Engineering’s Laboratory Manager and Chemical Hygiene Officer.
