Health Advisory - Coronavirus

Published March 3, 2020

Coronavirus Information

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus - known as COVID-19. The CDC considers this new virus a public health concern based on current information. However, the immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time and to date, there have been no confirmed cases in Delaware. The CDC and the World Health Organization are diligently monitoring the situation and providing ongoing guidance. We will keep the Wilmington University community updated as changes occur. To learn the latest from the CDC on the COVID-19, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Precautions

Although there have been no confirmed cases in Delaware, it is flu season and it is always a good idea to protect yourself and others from infection by following these practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based (at least 60% alcohol) hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. When used correctly, commercially available disposable disinfectant wipes, cloths, or towelettes are effective for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.

Symptoms

Symptoms may be flu-like, ranging from mild to serious, and include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing

If you have symptoms of fever, cough, and/or difficulty breathing you should seek medical care right away. It may be best to phone your provider in advance so that they may take precautionary steps to keep other people from being exposed.

Global Travel

CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the following destinations:

  • China
  • South Korea
  • Iran
  • Italy
  • Japan

If your travels are taking you to any of these countries, we suggest maintaining flexible travel plans. While the risk of infection remains low, authorities are taking all precautions against the possible spread of the virus, which may impact business operations and disruptions to travel. Please see Coronavirus Disease 2019 Information for Travel on the CDC's web site for more information.

Updates

Wilmington University officials will continue to monitor the status of the outbreak closely and will communicate these changes as needed.
