Financial Aid COVID-19 FAQ
Can I still apply for Financial Aid?
Yes! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is completed entirely online and applications are still being processed by the Department of Education and Wilmington University’s financial aid office. Several of the additional requirements students need to complete in the process may be submitted electronically, and the financial aid office can accept forms and other documentation via fax (302-328-8905), via email (email@example.com) and through USPS mail. Please do not send any documents containing social security numbers and/or birth dates via email. Also due to campus closures, the financial aid office can only retrieve mail sent through USPS once per week.
I have already applied for Aid. Will I still be awarded during this time?
Yes! The financial aid office is still functioning at 100% during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are currently processing applications for 2020-21 and 2021-22. The deadline to complete the 2020-2021 FAFSA is June 30, 2021. The 2021-2022 FAFSA covers Fall 2021, Spring 2022, and Summer 2022. You can still expect that your aid processing will take anywhere from 3-5 weeks after all requirements have been submitted. Once an aid offer is made, you will need to log into your myWilmU student portal to accept it. Additional student loan requirements like Entrance Counseling (EC) and Master Promissory Note (MPN) are also completed online at Federal Student Aid. Keep in mind that you will need to make sure that all requirements have been submitted and satisfied before an aid offer can be made.
What if I lose my job and cannot pay my student loans?
To provide relief to student loan borrowers during the COVID-19 national emergency, federal student loan borrowers are automatically being placed in an administrative forbearance, which allows you to temporarily stop making your monthly loan payment. The suspension of payments will last until Sept 30, 2021, but you can still make payments if you choose. Read Coronavirus and Forbearance Info for Students, Borrowers, and Parents from Federal Student Aid to learn more. If you are in repayment for private student loans, you will need to contact your lender to find out whether they are offering options for deferment or forbearance.
What if I lose my job after I have already been awarded Aid, and my financial situation changes?
If your financial situation changes dramatically during the course of the year, you may be eligible to apply for a Professional Judgment (PJ). A financial aid advisor can review the documented changes in your household’s financial situation and make a determination for any changes in your aid eligibility. Contact the Financial Aid Office directly and speak with an Aid Advisor to discuss the changes in your circumstances. They will help you determine if you qualify for a PJ at this time.
If I complete my FAFSA and provide all necessary information to the Financial Aid Office, will my Aid still be processed by the office?
Yes! As stated above, the financial aid office is functioning at 100% and processing aid applications, aid offers, and disbursing funds to student accounts as scheduled. For a list of the transfer and refund dates, see Important Dates.
Will there be any delay in receiving my Aid due to COVID-19?
The financial aid office does not expect any delays in processing and disbursing aid to student billing accounts during the COVID-19 pandemic. For a list of the transfer and refund dates, see Important Dates. Please keep in mind that the local and national situation is unpredictable, but Wilmington University will make every effort to keep students informed of any changes that may impact our business processes.
How can I speak to someone regarding Financial Aid while offices are closed?
