Government Lobbyists Highlight Gov't. Relations Speaker Series

Wilmington University’s Government and Public Policy program and the External Affairs Department will present “Government Relations: The Role of Lobbyists in Shaping Public Policy” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3. This free event will be held in the auditorium of the Audrey Doberstein Admissions Center on the university’s New Castle campus.

Lobbying, the process of influencing public and government policy on behalf of an interest group, is often viewed poorly by those who are unaware of the lobbyist’s role and how their process works. This installment of the speaker series features a distinguished panel of Delaware lobbyists who will discuss their role in state and regional government and their work to influence and shape public policy.

The distinguished panelists are:

David Swayze - Former Legal Counsel, Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delaware; member of the Administrative Law Section and the Banking Law Committee of the Commercial Law Section of the American Bar Association; member of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the Banking and Environmental Law Committees of the Delaware State Bar Association.

Robert Byrd - President and CEO of The Byrd Group, lobbyists focused on local and state government relations. He is a former member of the Delaware House of Representatives and Majority Whip; former chair of the Labor and Commerce Committee; former vice president and chief lobbyist for the Delaware Chamber of Commerce; former Chair of the Delaware Economic and Financial Advisory Council.

Rick Deadwyler - Director, DuPont Company Government Affairs Mid-Atlantic, dealing with advocacy, public policy and business-development initiatives for the company’s mid-Atlantic region. He is also vice chairman of the board of St. Francis Hospital Foundation, Director of the Good Government Fund and sits on the board of the Delaware Children’s Museum.
