Wilmington University Provost Dr. Betty Caffo is Honored at Delaware Today’s Women in Business Luncheon

30 Delaware Women Recognized as Outstanding Leaders

Wilmington University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Betty Caffo, was one of 30 women recognized at Delaware Today’s Women in Business Luncheon. The Luncheon, which was held at the Chase Center in Wilmington, is held annually to honor Delaware women who have excelled as business leaders and successful entrepreneurs. Dr. Caffo’s commitment to students and their success, improving the quality of academic programs at the University, and building a strong, unified team of faculty and staff, make her a role model for women in Delaware and beyond.

Maria Hess, Senior Editor of Delaware Today, welcomed the 400 luncheon attendees and recognized each of the Women in Business honorees. Hess, who wrote the article ‘Women in Business’ that is featured in this month’s issue of Delaware Today, went on to explain the selection process. She described how past Women in Business honorees recommend a woman that they feel embody the modern concept of leadership. These women then go through an interview process in which the larger pool of applicants is whittled down to just 30 women. Hess commended Dr. Caffo for being one such exceptional leader. "The women we featured are transforming their organizations. Each is an innovative and collaborative leader, and each can communicate her vision while inspiring her staff. Dr. Caffo certainly epitomizes the type of leader we hoped to profile."

Ellen Kullman, the first female CEO of DuPont and a Wilmington native was the keynote speaker. Kullman was named as one of the top 100 Most Powerful Women by Forbes Magazine and has been an inspiration to women nationwide. “Passion,” said Kullen, “It is so important to be passionate about what you do. I really love what I do and I love this company and I think to be successful in your business you have to be passionate about it.” She went on to emphasize the importance of teamwork, personal transformation, rising to the challenge and most importantly, leading the change.

Along with Dr. Caffo three other Wilmington University graduates were honored at the Women in Business Luncheon. Congratulations to Lynn Lester, (’93 M.S. Public Administration) owner of The Brick Hotel in Georgetown, Del., Laura Harding-McCann (’88 M.S. Human Resources) who is a current doctoral student at Wilmington University and the Director of Employee and Community Relations at Grottos Pizza, and Cindy Small (’93 B.A. Communication Arts) the Executive Director of the Kent County Tourism and Convention Bureau. Additionally, Wilmington University adjunct faculty member, Cathy Rossi, who is the Manager of Public and Government Affairs at AAA Mid-Atlantic, was recognized at the luncheon.

Dr. Caffo noted, “It was certainly an honor and privilege to be in the company of such accomplished women.” She went on to say, “Ellen Kullman really captured the essence of successful women in business when she stressed the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and passion. This leader of a world-wide company serves as a positive role model for women in business.”
