Wilmington University Announces Partnership with Year Up Wilmington
On Thursday, November 1, Wilmington University officially announced its partnership with Year Up Wilmington in a ribbon cutting ceremony that was held in the auditorium of the Doberstein Admissions Center. Dr. Eileen Donnelly, Vice President of Enrollment Management, was joined by Dr. Erin DiMarco, Senior Vice President of Wilmington University, and Year Up Executive Director Hassan Charles on stage as she did the honors of cutting the ribbon that signified the official beginning of the 3-year partnership in front of an audience filled with friends, family, faculty along with Year Up alumni and the newest cohort of 40 WilmU students.
Year Up Wilmington is the local chapter of a national non-profit organization dedicated to teaching marketable job skills to disadvantaged college students and connecting them as interns with area companies in search of those skills. Each student cohort will take six months of classes to learn skills that Year Up’s corporate partners are looking for in entry level new hires.
Following these classes, students will apply their new skills and gain work experience as interns with those businesses. The hands-on experience will benefit the students' education and their career goals in addition to meeting the needs of the region's businesses. The students will each earn a stipend and receive credit toward their college degrees during their training and internships.
