Wilmington University to Host BSides Delaware Information Security Conference

On Saturday, November 6, Wilmington University will host a one-day conference for information security professionals. BSides Delaware is a free conference open to the Wilmington University community and the general public. Running from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the University’s New Castle campus, the conference will be sponsored by the University’s Information Security Alliance, Sourcefire and Digital Trust, LLC.

‘BSides’ is a community-driven event that allows information security professionals and enthusiasts to meet, discuss and share information on security issues. Professionals will present on topics on forensics, crypto, hardware hacking, creative compliance, mentoring and much more.

Wilmington University's student and alumni group, the Information Security Alliance, will be host and facilitate the Security BSides Delaware conference; the first of its kind in Delaware. The group will be inviting information security experts and professionals from across the east coast to share their expertise with Delaware's information security community.

The idea of hosting a local information security conference occurred to Janice Paulson, a Wilmington University Computer and Network Security student, when she attended Bsides Las Vegas this past summer. Within her degree program students are encouraged to attend information security conferences, such as Defcon and Schmoocon on a regular basis. While at BSides Las Vegas, Janice met information security professionals who live in the Delaware area. It was then that Janice thought, “One shouldn't have to go to Vegas to meet people that live close by.” And so, Security Bsides Delaware was born.

Seminars featured at the BSides Delaware conference will include:

•    The Evolution of Evil – Changes in the Use of USB Devices as Delivery Mechanisms for Malicious Code (presented by Brad Bowers)

•    P2P Forensics: Your Admin Knows Your Porn Habits (presented by Brian Baskin, Deputy Lead Technical Engineer with the Defense Cyber Investigations Training Academy, part of the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center)

•    Social Engineering for Non-Penetration Testers: How to Practice the Basics Without Getting Slapped, Shot, or Arrested (presented by Scott Hazel, winner of the Defcon Social Engineering competition)

•    Social Engineering and Target Profiling with 100% Accuracy Using Social Media and OSINT (presented by Dave Marcus, current Director of Security Research and Communications for McAfee Labs)

•    And many more!
