WilmU welcomes local high-schoolers to college courses

Twenty-one students from Christiana High School have already started a college education, thanks to their school's academic partnership with Wilmington University.

The arrangement enables the Newark, Delaware high school juniors to take English Composition II (ENG 122) and Introduction to Critical Thinking (PHI 100) — foundation courses in many colleges' degree programs — at the university's New Castle campus this semester.

It's a big opportunity for them, says WilmU academic partnership specialist Lisa Lombardozzi. "Our dual-enrollment partnership gives Christiana's students a firsthand experience of what's required to be successful in college," she said. "It allows them to refine crucial time management, study, and thinking skills with the support of both their school's and WilmU's instructors. Our hope is that this 'jump start' will provide this group with both college credits and confidence."

The students' advanced efforts began during the fall 2017 semester, when they completed English Composition I (ENG 121) from a Christiana classroom, with one of the high school's teachers serving as a WilmU adjunct.

A field trip late last year introduced them to the New Castle campus, where they were issued WilmU identification badges and Student Success Center personnel presented a seminar on test-taking strategies.

The composition and critical thinking classes are part of Christiana High School's Honors/Dual Enrollment Academy, which it offers to students in grades 9 through 12 in conjunction with Wilmington University. More than 24 college credits can be earned through its advanced placement courses.

Designed to challenge accelerated students with an academically rigorous curriculum, the program gives them a competitive advantage when applying to colleges and scholarships. The completion of transferrable, college-level credits may also allow them to place out of equivalent coursework in their first year of studies.
