AmeriCorps Volunteers Earn Tuition Assistance at Wilmington University

WilmU strikes an alliance with national community service program

Officials from Wilmington University and AmeriCorps met at Dover’s Legislative Hall on October 5 for a swearing-in ceremony confirming an alliance that offers tuition assistance to AmeriCorps alumni. While 37 states and 350 schools in the nation participate with AmeriCorps, Wilmington University is one of the first schools in Delaware to align with the network of national service programs.

“It is a privilege to honor the men and women of AmeriCorps who have completed dedicated service to our country by assisting them in their goals of earning college degrees,” says Wilmington University President Dr. LaVerne T. Harmon. “Part of our mission is to provide opportunities for those who believe that a quality education will enhance their professional and personal lives."

Participants who have completed service for AmeriCorps can enroll at Wilmington University and receive $1,000 toward tuition each academic year they are enrolled until graduation, for a maximum of six years. He or she must enroll consecutively year-to-year for a minimum credit load of 18 credits for an undergraduate program and a minimum credit load of 12 credits for a graduate program. The student must also maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher for an undergraduate program and 3.0 or higher for the graduate program.

AmeriCorps is made up of three primary programs that take a different approach to improve lives and foster civic engagement. Members commit their time to address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more.
