Year-Round Pell (Summer Pell)

About Year Round Pell

Beginning summer 2018, Pell Grant eligible students can receive up to 150% of their original scheduled Pell award each year. What does this mean for you? If you were a Pell eligible student in fall 2017 and/or spring 2018, you may qualify for additional Pell Grant for summer 2018 so that you can continue taking classes in the summer and finish your degree faster than you would otherwise.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible to receive a summer Pell grant, you must:

  • Have completed a 2017-18 FAFSA and have an accepted award
  • Be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) during the summer term
  • Be meeting satisfactory academic progress (SAP) requirements
  • Have at least 50% of your Lifetime Pell Eligibility remaining as of summer 2018 (You can check for your remaining eligibility level online by logging on to https://nsldsfap.ed.gov/login using your FSA ID. View your Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) on the Financial Aid Review page)
  • Be otherwise eligible to receive Pell Grant funds for the term

Important Facts to Note:

  • A Pell Grant alone is not enough to cover the full cost of attending classes in the summer.  For example, the maximum Pell Grant a student can receive in one semester is $2960 for full-time enrollment (12 credits).  The tuition cost for 12 credits at the New Castle Campus is $4356.  A full Pell grant amount is based on full time enrollment and it’s adjusted when a student is enrolled in fewer than 12 credits. The tuition cost for 6 credits is $2178 and that same Pell Grant would be adjusted down to $1480.
  • If you used your full annual loan eligibility over the fall and spring semesters, you will not have additional loan funds to add to the summer. You will likely have an out-of-pocket balance after the Pell is applied.
  • If you are registered in at least 6 credits and receive an additional Pell Grant, and your enrollment drops below 6 credits, the entire summer Pell will be RETURNED and you will owe a balance to the university
  • Any additional Pell Grant received for the summer 2018 term will be included in your Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) percentage.

When will I See my Summer Pell on my Financial Aid Award?

If you are meeting the above criteria, and have enrolled in summer classes, you can expect to have the summer Pell added to your award by the beginning of the summer semester (May 14, 2018) or shortly thereafter.

How much may I receive in Year Round Pell?

Your Summer Pell Grant amount will depend on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), enrollment and prior Pell usage during the fall and spring.  The scenarios below will help you understand how the summer Pell is calculated.

Student A was enrolled full-time for the fall and spring semesters and received full Pell disbursements.
