Course Schedule and Format Options

WilmU offers flexible options for when and how you can complete your courses. These options are listed when browsing or searching for courses in myWilmU Registration.

Course Schedule Options


semester, block, and modular courses

Semester Courses

Semester classes meet fourteen times over fifteen weeks. Typically, each class meets once per week for 2-1/2 hours. After the seventh week, there is a mid-semester break with no class meeting, called reading week.

Block Courses

Block classes meet for seven weeks. Typically, each class meets once per week for five hours. There are two seven-week blocks during each semester. Block I starts on the first week of the semester, and Block II starts on the eighth week of the semester, with a reading week between each block.

Modular Courses

Modular classes meet for only two weekends in one month for twenty hours each weekend. Modular classes meet Friday 5:30–9:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 9:00–5:00pm. There is a weekend with no classes between the two twenty-hour sessions. For more information see the Modular Class Schedule.

Course Format Options


Face-to-Face Courses

Face-to-Face courses meet on-campus or on-site for all scheduled class meetings, as published in the course schedule each semester. While all scheduled meetings are in-person in a classroom, some learning activities are also conducted online via Canvas, our online learning management system. Face-to-Face courses may be offered as either semester or block classes.

Online Courses

Online courses provide the ultimate convenience for self-motivated, self-directed students. Students in online courses complete weekly readings, assignments, and other learning activities using Canvas, our online learning platform. Students and faculty members communicate with faculty and classmates via e-mail, chat, and discussion boards. These courses are 100% online courses with no on-location meetings. Online-Live Courses

Online Live courses provide students with weekly interactive synchronous class sessions. Sessions have a pre-determined date and time. The balance of learning activities utilize the online learning platform. Online Live courses may be offered as either semester or block classes. For more information, see Online Live Courses.

Hybrid Courses

Hybrid courses are a combination of traditional classroom instruction with up to 75 percent of instruction held in a synchronous and/or asynchronous online environment. Hybrid courses may be offered as either semester or block classes. For more information see Online Learning Options.

FLEX Courses

FLEX courses are courses in which time spent in the classroom include a live synchronous webinar. This opportunity provides students an option to attend on campus or via the webinar for each class session. Time spent in the classroom may be reduced by as much as 60% with the balance of learning activities moved online using Canvas. FLEX course duration may be either semester or block.
